unconventionality

My dream role was playing Elle Woods in Legally Blonde: The Musical on Broadway.

The tense of that statement is new… I had to pause writing this to let it sink in.

My dream role was playing Elle Woods in Legally Blonde: The Musical on Broadway.

About a year ago, I asked myself some questions:

  • What is my dream role?

  • What would haunt me about playing that character?

  • What would keep me up at night in terms of how I wanted to portray that character?

  • What would I want to be sure I communicated to the audience about that character?

While this wasn’t necessarily what I was going for at the time, these questions were immensely helpful in acting as a sort of back door into figuring out what I wanted to say.

When I was in theater, I felt like I was a passive vessel for someone else’s vision. And, depending on the situation, I got to add a little je ne sais quoi.

It felt like a little air valve that I got to

In that respect, I guess these were questions that helped me stop performing.

While I don’t approach my work the same way now, I will be sitting with these questions again. I’m sure they are coming back around to teach me something.
